Judge grants alleged drug trafficker N2m bail
(Nigeria) A Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday granted
bail in the sum of N2 million to a 42-year- old accused, Benjamin Chukwu,
facing charges of alleged drug trafficking.
The accused was charged by the National Drug Law Enforcement
Agency, NDLEA, on a one-count charge bordering on the offence.
He was arraigned on June 17 and had pleaded not guilty to
the charge.
Trial judge, Justice Mohammed Yunusa had however, ordered
the remand of the accused at the Ikoyi Prisons, pending the determination of a
bail application filed by his counsel, Mrs Williams Ekwe.
Delivering his ruling on the application for the bail of the
accused, Yunusa admitted him to bail in the sum of N2 million, with two
sureties in like sum.
The judge added that one of the sureties must be a blood
relation of the accused, and must show evidence of a tax clearance.
He adjourned the case till October 16, for substantive
trial.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Mr Jerry Aernan, had told the court
that the accused committed the offence on May 6.
Aernan said that the accused was apprehended by NDLEA
officers at the Gbaji check point along the Lagos-Seme road, with about 13.5
kilogrammes of Cannabis Sativa or Indian Hemp.
According to the prosecutor, the accused was alleged to be
in the business of selling the narcotic to touts in his vicinity.
He said that the offence contravened the provisions of
section 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation, 2004.
The offence of drug trafficking could attract up to a term
of life imprisonment on conviction.
