Gunmen kill 2 policemen, injure 3 others

(Nigeria) The Edo State Police Command said on Wednesday that unknown gunmen had killed two policemen and injured three others on Ikiran-Oke road in Akoko/Edo Local Government Area of the state.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Foluso Adebanjo, confirmed in Benin.
Adebanjo said that the incident occurred when the gunmen opened fire at the 18-seater police bus with registration number NPF 3148 C, conveying the occupants to Lagos from Abuja
He said that the attack on the policemen took place near Ibilo at 11:30 a.m.
Adebanjo said that an Inspector and two other policemen, who survived the attack, were receiving medical treatment in an undisclosed hospital.
He said that the attackers, who were dressed in military uniform, flagged the police bus and opened fire.
The police commissioner said that the remains of the deceased policemen had been deposited at the mortuary of Anyakur Specialist Hospital in Akoko-Edo.

NBC has no powers to impose fine on broadcast stations --Court

(Nigeria) The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has been restrained by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, from imposing fines on broadcast stations in the country. Trial judge in the matter, Justice James Omotosho also set aside the N500,000 fines imposed on March 1, 2019, on each of 45 broadcast stations. The court made the orders in its judgment a suit by the Incorporated Trustees of Media Rights Agenda, MRA, which had sued the NBC. Justice Omotosho held that the NBC, not being a court of law, had no power to impose sanctions as punishment on broadcast stations. The court further held that the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, which gives the commission the power to impose sanction, is in conflict with Section 6 of the Constitution that vested judicial power in the court of law.
