Mayor in Ukraine's Donetsk reports casualties in airport fighting
The mayor of the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk told
residents to stay home Monday after fierce fighting between the military and
separatist rebels that he said had caused casualties among civilians.
"Keep an eye on your children and try not to leave your
homes unless it is an emergency," Oleksandr Lukyanchenko said in a
statement on the mayoral website, advising residents to avoid the airport and
the railway station, reports AFP.
Gun battles were reportedly continuing after fighter jets
and helicopters gunships hit the airport's main terminal after it was seized by
scores of armed insurgents in a dramatic escalation of the conflict in the
east.
"There are civilian casualties," the mayor said
without elaborating.
AFP journalists saw the body of a woman lying not far from
the Donetsk railway station but it was not clear how she had died.
