Sudanese Army retakes rebel stronghold
The Sudanese Army, SAF, says it has retaken a stronghold
town of the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North, SPLM-N.
SAF spokesman, Col. Sawarmi Saad, who announced this on
Wednesday said the town is in the centre of the Nuba Mountains in the contested
South Kordufan region.
Saad said the strategic SPLM-N command stronghold town of
Abri was ``liberated’’ along with the nearby Sarafayah village by SAF, with
heavy losses inflicted on the rebels.
``This is part of the ongoing SAF operations aimed at
putting an end to the rebellion in South Kordufan,’’ he said.
Saad admitted that a number of government soldiers were
killed in the fighting over Abri, without giving figures.
The statement came at a time the government and SPLM-N were
engaged in negotiations in Addis Ababa.
The talks have been marred by persistent differences over
the technicalities of ceasefire or cessation of hostilities.
