YabaTech NASU protests non-payment of CONTISS arrears

(Nigeria) The Non-Academic Staff Union of Education and Associated Institutions, NASU, Yaba College of Technology, YabaTech, Chapter, Lagos on Thursday protested what it called non-payment of arrears of Consolidated Tertiary Institution Salary Structure, CONTISS 15, report NAN.
Mr Olatunbosun Ilesanmi, the NASU Chairman, told journalists on the sidelines of the protest that the action was to press the payment of the salary arrears since 2010.
He said the union was unhappy over what he called continual neglect of polytechnic workers in spite of its three-month strike over the issue.
``We members of NASU in YabaTech and other federal polytechnics across the country are staging peaceful protests within our campuses to register our annoyance over plans to pay CONTISS arrears by instalments.
``From 2009 to date, the government has not increased funding to the polytechnics; it has not paid our CONTISS arrears. We want our arrears in full, we say `no’ to payment by instalments.
``All we want is for government to honour all agreements reached with our union as they have done with our counterparts in the universities,`` Ilesanmi said.
The union presented a copy of its demands to the Rector of the institution, Dr Kudirat Ladipo, for onward transmission to the supervising Minister of Education, Mr Nyesome Wike.
Mr Innocent Akhuemonkhan, Deputy Rector, Academics, who received the letter on behalf of the rector, promised to deliver the letter.
The protest which lasted for about three hours, disrupted academic activities on the campus.
Students abandoned their lecture halls to watch the protesting lecturers.
The CONTISS agreement was signed in 2010 both by officials of the union and the Federal Government.
