Police arraign man, 34, over alleged cybercrime

A 34-year-old man, Victor Kekong, who allegedly manipulated some Federal Government data and produced forged official documents at a cybercafe, was on Friday in Lagos charged before a Yaba Magistrates Court, Lagos.

Kekong, who resides at Ifako-Ogba area of Lagos, is facing an eight-count charge bordering on forgery, stealing and obtaining money under false pretences.

He, however, denied the charges.

But the prosecutor, Mr Felix Ifijen, insisted that the accused had sometime between Febuary and December 2013 manipulated the data of some federal government agencies and also forged some documents.

According to Ifijen, the offences were committed at a cybercafe at Ifako-Ogba.

``Kekong, between February and December 2013, forged the following documents: a Memorandum of Acceptance signed by the IGP, Mohammed Abubakar, a certificate of legality signed by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar, and the then Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, a foreign draft of the Central Bank of Nigeria for the sum of $200 dated Jan. 30, 2013.

``He also forged an identification card of the Nigeria Civil Service Commission bearing the name, David Aguirre; a contract award certificate No. 0178933 belonging to the Ministry of Tourism in Benin Republic bearing the name, Philip Aguirre, and an anti-drug/money laundering clearance certificate No. 8347 in the name of Philip Aguirre belonging to the United Nations Terrorist Inspection Board.

``A tax clearance certificate purportedly issued by the Internal Revenue Service, New York, bearing the name Philip Aguirre; a deed of lodge and certificate of deposit No.15015 belonging to the Global Diplomatic Service, Avilla, Madrid, Spain,'' Ifijen said.

According to the prosecutor, the accused was apprehended by the police following a tip-off.

He said the offences contravened Sections 312, 361, 363, 378 and 389 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The Magistrate, Mrs Yewande Aje-Afunwa, granted the accused bail in the sum of N1 million with five sureties in like sum.

Further hearing in the case was adjourned to March 28.
