Man jailed 7 months for drug peddling in Ekiti

(Nigeria) A Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State on Tuesday sentenced one Gbenga Osungoroye to seven months imprisonment  for drug peddling.
Trial judge, Justice Adamu Hobon,  sentenced the convict without an option of fine.
He said the sentence would serve as a lesson to others  who might want to take to  the illicit trade of drug dealing.
Justice Hobon said he considered the mitigation of sentence for the convict on the ground that he was battling tuberculosis.
This, the judge said, was revealed by the medical report presented to the court by the defence counsel.
He, however, directed that  the jail term should commence  from the date of  his arrest on July 21, 2013.
The counsel to the NDLEA, had told the court  that the convict  was arrested on the  Ise/Orun road in Ise/Orun Local Government Area of Ekiti.
Prosecution said the convict at the point of arrest was carrying 23.8 kilogrammes of Indian hemp.
The counsel said the offence contravened section 11(c) of the NDLEA Act Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
The convict had pleaded guilty to the one count charge while his counsel, Mr Cletus Nnachetta,  prayed the court to temper justice with mercy.
