Police arrest 5 for allegedly robbing, raping woman in Ogun

(Nigeria) The police in Ogun on Wednesday said they arrested five members of an armed robbery gang who allegedly robbed and raped a young lady on Monday along Idi-iroko highway.
The spokesperson of the state Police Command, Mr Muyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement in Abeokuta that the suspects were arrested on Tuesday at Olodo in Odeda Local Government Area of the state.
Adejobi said a police Anti- Robbery Team, led by Sgt. Adebayo Oyesomi, while on a routine patrol on the highway, sighted the victim by the road side at Papalanto junction shortly after she was released by the robbers.
``The 33-year-old lady told the police how she was robbed of N1.8 million cash, jewellery, wrist watch and cell phones valued at N200,000 after they had raped her.
``She also co-operated and gave some information which assisted the police in arresting the robbers on Tuesday at Olodo. All the items stolen from the victim have been recovered by the police," Adejobi said.
He said that two other members of the gang were at large.
Adejobi also said that the suspects had confessed to the crime and were being held at the command's headquarters at Eleweran for further investigation.
``The state Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye, has ordered that the fleeing members of the armed gang must be arrested without delay and the matter thoroughly investigated. We hereby reassure the general public of adequate protection of lives and property in Ogun State," he said.
