Police arrest 2 women for alleged child trafficking

(Nigeria) The police division in Ekumenyi, Abakaliki, Eboyin State on Wednesday arrested two women aged 25 and 27 for allegedly selling a three-week-old baby to a ``baby factory’’ in Abia State.
They gave the names of the suspects as Amarachi Osulor and one Lorretta, whose surname was not disclosed.
A member of Osulor’s family was said to have informed the police that she was suspicious of her claim of delivery and the death of the baby.
The family source said Osulor  left home without notice with her nine-month-old pregnancy and returned a month later with a story of delivery and death of the baby.
“She suddenly disappeared with her nine-month-old pregnancy to an unknown destination on December 3.
“Surprisingly, she re-appeared after one month with some cooked-up stories about how she delivered her baby and how the baby later died after a few days.
“Unsatisfied with her explanation, we demanded to know why she disappeared from home, where she delivered her baby and where the corpse was buried,’’ the family member said.
Not convinced by Osulor’s explanations, the female relation reported the incident to the police.
Osulor, according to a police source, confessed to have gone to Aba with one Loretta, where she was delivered of her baby.
A police source told NAN that the suspects were yet to say how much the baby was sold.
The Divisional Police Officer in Ekumenyi, Mr Mustapha Aliu, who confirmed the arrest, however, declined to volunteer further information on the matter.
Aliu said the matter would soon be transferred to the state police command after preliminary investigations.
“All I can tell you is that our men arrested two suspects involved in alleged child trafficking. We are still conducting preliminary investigation and will soon transfer the matter to the state police command for further investigations.
“The police spokesperson will address the press on the matter,’’ Aliu said.
