LUTH health workers remain resolute, to continue with strike
(Nigeria) The striking health workers at the Lagos
University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Idi-Araba, Lagos, on Monday said they
would continue with their strike until the Hospital's management addressed the
union’s demands.
Mr Kehinde Adegoke, the LUTH Chapter Chairman, Senior Staff
Association of Universities Teaching Hospitals, Research and Allied Institutes,
SSAUTHRAI, made this known in Lagos.
Adegoke spoke with News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos, shortly
after the union’s congress to review the strike and map out new strategies.
The workers, under the aegis of the Joint House Unions and
Associations, JHUA, had on December 31 embarked on an indefinite strike to
further express their grievances.
NAN reports that JHUA comprises health workers in the
Medical and Health Workers Union, MWHUN and the Senior Staff Association of
Universities Teaching Hospitals, Research and Allied Institutes, SSAUTHRAI.
It also includes the Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU and the National
Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, NANNM.
``We are tired of promises upon promises by LUTH management
which has not yielded any positive result,” Adegoke told NAN.
He said that the strike which began on December 31, was the
last resort for the health workers unions, who had endured over three years of
unfulfilled promises.
Adegoke said, ``The board, instead of appealing to JHUA to
call off the strike, should try and address some of our issues.”
He said that the management and board had refused to sign a
memorandum of understanding, which specifically sets a time frame on when each
issue brought forth by JHUA would be resolved.
``We are still waiting for a sign from the management that
they have heard our requests and are doing something in response. We want to
return to work, in fact, our members return every week to see if any change has
occurred, to enable them to go back to work,” Adegoke said.
When contacted, the LUTH spokesperson, Mrs Hope Nwokolo,
said that she was not at the JHUA congress and, therefore, could not comment on
the matter.
