Court remands man over alleged armed robbery

(Nigeria) An Ikeja Magistrate  Court in Lagos on Thursday remanded a mechanic, Musa Yakubu, 22, at the Kirikiri Prisons, Apapa, over alleged armed robbery.
The accused, residing at No 8, Ajasa Street Command, Ipaja, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and armed robbery.
The Magistrate, Mrs Margaret Dan-Oni, ordered that the accused be remanded in custody, pending legal advice from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions.
Dan-Oni, however, did not take the plea of the accused, as she adjourned the case to Feb. 28 for mention.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Edet Okoi, had told the court that the accused and others currently at large committed the offences on January 14 at the Agbenlekale Area of Lagos.
He said Yakubu and his gang, armed with a pistol and other dangerous weapons, robbed a Volkswagen bus with registration no KRD 809 XF.
Okoi added that the bus, which was valued N1.5 million, belong to one Mr Simon Akushile and Mr Oluwaseun Adesiga.
The prosecutor noted that ``the accused belongs to a syndicate that robs passengers in buses.’’
He said the offences contravened sections 1 (2) (a), (b) and 5, of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Cap. 398, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 1990.
