NUJ president lauds performance of journalists

(Nigeria) Mallam Muhammad Garba, the President, Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, has lauded the performance and contributions of journalists to national development.
He gave the commendation in Gombe on Saturday night in a message he delivered at an End-of-Year dinner, organised by the Gombe Council of the NUJ.
Represented by Alhaji Mukhtar Gidado, the former Vice President, NUJ Zone E, Garba said journalists played critical role in the development of the country, in spite of the hazards they encounter in the discharge of their duties.
He expressed dismay over the harassment of journalists on duty by some security agents and urged them to desist from such unpatriotic acts.
He urged members of the union to always publicise such unpatriotic acts of some security agents for the public to know and appreciate the environment under which journalists were operating.
Garba urged journalists to take the issue of NUJ Insurance Policy seriously in order to secure the future of their families and relations.
The NUJ boss also urged journalists to shun bias reporting, adding that the union was doing a lot to curtail the activities of quacks in the profession.
He added that the National Secretariat of the union had directed state councils to make efforts to rid the profession of quacks.
In a message he delivered at the occasion, the Gombe State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr Habu Dawaki, commended the cordial relationship existing between the media and the state government.
Dawaki, who was represented by Alhaji Saidu Gaddam, the Director of Information, expressed concern over the recent encounter between some journalists and security agents in the state.
He promised that the ministry would take up the matter with a view to finding a lasting solution to such ugly incidence in future.
In his remarks, Alhaji Alhassan Yahaya, the Chairman, Gombe State Council of the NUJ, said the council had paid the insurance premium of 65 members of the union from the state.
He urged journalists practising in the state to register with the union to enable them to benefit from the NUJ Insurance Policy.
He said that the family of a deceased member of the union recently benefited from the policy to the tune of N1.5 million.
Yahaya urged security agents to stop harassing journalists while performing their legitimate duties and called on the management of media houses to protect their workers on duty
