Housewife seeks divorce for battery

(Nigeria) A housewife, Chioma Ngene, on Monday urged a Mararaba Upper Area Court to dissolve her two-year-old marriage to her husband, Emmanuel, for constant beating.
Chioma of Ruga Auta in Karu Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, told the court that her husband was fond of beating and insulting her.
``My husband always beats me whenever we have misunderstanding, and he also calls me a witch. I want an end to this marriage because I cannot cope with a man who beats his wife,” she said.
She said the marriage was contracted in 2011 according to Igbo native law and customs, and blessed with two children, Ebube and Esther.
Emmanuel, however, told the court that he still had interest in the marriage.
``I promise to change and stop beating her for the sake of my children,’’ Emmanuel said.
Emmanu applied for an adjournment for them to be reconciled.
The Presiding Judge, Mr Vincent Gwehemba, adjourned the case to December 11 for possible reconciliation or continuation of hearing.
