NUJ South-East mourns Nsukka chapel chairman

(Nigeria) The Vice President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in the South-East, Mr Chris Isiguzo,  has expressed shock over  the death  of Mr Cassidy Uchendu of Nsukka  Federated Chapel.
Isiguzo, who visited the family of the deceased in Nsukka, Enugu State on Monday, described his death as a great loss to the union.
According to him, the late Uchendu, who was chairman of the federated chapel, devoted his life to the service of humanity as a journalist.
``The late Uchendu was onetime the Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Correspondents' Chapel and Chairman of Nsukka Correspondents' Chapel before his death,'' he said.
The national vice president, who was accompanied by the Interim Chairman of the union in the state, Mr James Oparaekeocha, said the union had declared a three-day mourning period for the deceased beginning from Monday.
``The late chairman was an embodiment of humility and hard work. We extended the mourning to the entire South East because Cassidy served this union beyond this part of the country,” he said.
Isiguzo assured the family of the union's support during and after the funeral.
Responding, the wife of the deceased, Mrs Franca Uchendu, thanked the union for the visit, saying that her husband lived all his life in journalism having served for 40 years in different media organisations.
Uchendu, a correspondent of the Sun Newspapers, died of complicated pneumonia in an Enugu hospital on October 24 at the age of 68.

NBC has no powers to impose fine on broadcast stations --Court

(Nigeria) The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has been restrained by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, from imposing fines on broadcast stations in the country. Trial judge in the matter, Justice James Omotosho also set aside the N500,000 fines imposed on March 1, 2019, on each of 45 broadcast stations. The court made the orders in its judgment a suit by the Incorporated Trustees of Media Rights Agenda, MRA, which had sued the NBC. Justice Omotosho held that the NBC, not being a court of law, had no power to impose sanctions as punishment on broadcast stations. The court further held that the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, which gives the commission the power to impose sanction, is in conflict with Section 6 of the Constitution that vested judicial power in the court of law.
