Man in court for alleged abduction of 20-yr-old girl in Katsina

(Nigeria) The Katsina State Police Command on Thursday arraigned a 35-year-old man, Abba Gafai, in a Katsina State Chief Magistrate Court for abducting a 20-year-old girl, Shamsiyya Ahmad.
The Police Prosecutor, Mr Hashimu Musa, told the court that the mother of the victim, Bilkisu Muktar, reported the matter to the Central Police Station, Katsina.
He said that Muktar told the police that the accused abducted her daughter four months ago and her where about was still a mystery.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 272 of the Penal Code.
After listening to the prosecutor, the Presiding Magistrate, Abdulkarim Umar, referred the case back to the commissioner of police for further investigation.

NBC has no powers to impose fine on broadcast stations --Court

(Nigeria) The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has been restrained by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, from imposing fines on broadcast stations in the country. Trial judge in the matter, Justice James Omotosho also set aside the N500,000 fines imposed on March 1, 2019, on each of 45 broadcast stations. The court made the orders in its judgment a suit by the Incorporated Trustees of Media Rights Agenda, MRA, which had sued the NBC. Justice Omotosho held that the NBC, not being a court of law, had no power to impose sanctions as punishment on broadcast stations. The court further held that the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, which gives the commission the power to impose sanction, is in conflict with Section 6 of the Constitution that vested judicial power in the court of law.
