Court dissolves 13-year-old-marriage over threat to life

(Nigeria) An Ile-Ife Customary Court in Osun State on Thursday dissolved a 13-year-old marriage between Adijat and Dauda Tijani over threat to life and desertion.
Adijat had dragged her husband to court on September 9, for abandoning her and their four children without care for the past two years.
She also accused her husband of threatening her life, uncooperative attitude, constant fighting and the lack of care to the four children which she named as Sherif: 11, Fatia,: 8, Latif: 4 and Suliyat: 1.
Tijani accepted the allegation against him, saying the wife was troublesome and always in the mood to fight.He said ``I did not enjoy myself throughout our stay together.’’
The President of the court, Mr Gani Awoyera, dissolved the union after all efforts to settle the dispute became fruitless.
Awoyera ordered that the children be shared equally to stay with both plaintiff and the defendant with proper and adequate care given by both.

NBC has no powers to impose fine on broadcast stations --Court

(Nigeria) The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has been restrained by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, from imposing fines on broadcast stations in the country. Trial judge in the matter, Justice James Omotosho also set aside the N500,000 fines imposed on March 1, 2019, on each of 45 broadcast stations. The court made the orders in its judgment a suit by the Incorporated Trustees of Media Rights Agenda, MRA, which had sued the NBC. Justice Omotosho held that the NBC, not being a court of law, had no power to impose sanctions as punishment on broadcast stations. The court further held that the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, which gives the commission the power to impose sanction, is in conflict with Section 6 of the Constitution that vested judicial power in the court of law.
