2 remanded in prison over rape of 17-yr-old

(Nigeria) An Ibadan Chief Magistrate Court sitting at Iyaganku, Oyo State on Monday  remanded   Yekini Kazeem, 18,  and Ifeanyi Ezekiel,18, for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl.
Kazeem and Ezekiel were arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy and rape.
The prosecutor, Cpl. James Oriola,  told the court that Kazeem  and Ezekiel  with others now at large  conspired to  rape the victim.
Oriola  said the girl was  on an  errand for  her grand mother  when the accused pounced on her.
The offence was said to have been committed on Oct. 14  at about  8.30 p.m.  at Ijokodo Agbaje area of  Ibadan.
Oriola said the offence contravened sections  357 and 516 and was punishable under section 358 of the Criminal Code Cap. 38, Vol  II, Laws of Oyo State,  2000.
The pleas  of the accused  were  not taken.
Chief Magistrate Risikat Ebeloku-Mustapha  ordered the accused  to be remanded at Agodi prison pending the outcome of   legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution.
Ebeloku-Mustapha  adjourned the case till November 26 for mention.

NBC has no powers to impose fine on broadcast stations --Court

(Nigeria) The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has been restrained by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, from imposing fines on broadcast stations in the country. Trial judge in the matter, Justice James Omotosho also set aside the N500,000 fines imposed on March 1, 2019, on each of 45 broadcast stations. The court made the orders in its judgment a suit by the Incorporated Trustees of Media Rights Agenda, MRA, which had sued the NBC. Justice Omotosho held that the NBC, not being a court of law, had no power to impose sanctions as punishment on broadcast stations. The court further held that the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, which gives the commission the power to impose sanction, is in conflict with Section 6 of the Constitution that vested judicial power in the court of law.
