UNTH deserted as workers join strike

(Nigeria) The University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, Ituku/Ozalla in Enugu State on Thursday became a shadow of itself after its workers joined their colleagues in an indefinite strike.
The hospital had on Wednesday recorded a partial strike when a few unions downed their tools in response to the call by a joint union of medical health workers to embark on the strike.
At a mass rally of the workers in Ituku/Ozalla on Thursday, the leaders of the various unions mobilised their members to join the strike.
They declared unanimously that there was no going back on the strike until their national leadership said otherwise.
Meanwhile, relations of patients began moves to relocate them shortly after the rally as the workers, including nurses, packed their bags and left them stranded.
The Public Relations Officer of the hospital, Mr Cyril Keleze, told NAN that doctors were not part of the strike and that the hospital would not close down.
Keleze said patients with ``very bad cases’’ would remain in the hospital to be attended to by the doctors
