OPC member arraigned over allegedly killing of Lagos socialite

(Nigeria) An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on Wednesday remanded a member of the Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC, Ismaila Ramon, in prison over the alleged killing of a socialite, Alhaji Abdulkarim Kadri.
The Chief Magistrate, Miss S. Solebo, remanded the accused at the Ikoyi Prisons, Lagos pending a legal advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions.
The court did not take the plea of the OPC member.
Ramon, 30, who resides at No. 22, Akosile St. Ijora, Badia is facing a charge of manslaughter.
The prosecutor, Insp. R. Odigie, said that the accused committed the crime on August 4 at Gaskia College in Badia at a prayer meeting by some Muslim faithful during the Ramadan.
He said that the accused was one of the OPC members employed to maintain peace and order during the Ramadan prayer.
According to Odigie, the accused arbitrarily shot his Dane gun and a bullet hit Kadri, 72.
The prosecutor said that the offence committed contravened Section 222 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.
Section 222 provides that a person who unlawfully kills another in circumstance which does not constitute murder is guilty of manslaughter and liable to life imprisonment.
The magistrate adjourned the case to October 9 for mention.
