Human parts dealer:Court adjourns driver's trial to Oct. 17

(Nigeria) An Ikorodu Magistrate Court in Lagos on Thursday adjourned till October 17, the case of a 27-year-old commercial driver charged with alleged possession of human parts. The accused, Kolawole Sikiru, who had been in custody since October 31, 2012, is facing a two- count charge of conspiracy and unlawful possession of a human skull, palm, and a heart.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Iyabo Johnson, told the court that the accused and others still at large, committed the offences on October 6, 2012.
Johnson said that the accused was caught in possession of the decomposing human parts at the Sagamu Road Cemetery at midnight, while armed with a shovel, knife and a torchlight.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 409 and 236, of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
However, Sikiru, whose address is unknown, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The defence counsel, Mr A. Aromolaran, urged the court to strike out the case for lack of diligent prosecution.
Aromolaran noted that the prosecution witnesses and the Investigating Police Officer, IPO, had twice been absent, and had consequently stalled trial.
But the Magistrate, Mr B.A Sonuga adjourned the case to October 17, and ordered the prosecutor to inform the IPO and witnesses in the case to be present at the next sitting.
