3 men docked for allegedly attacking policemen

(Nigeria) Three men were on Wednesday in Lagos arraigned for allegedly attacking two policemen while performing their official duties.
The accused -- Afeez Ismaila, 29; Eddy Thomas, 40; and Wasiu Lateef, 40 -- are facing a charge of assault before a Somolu Magistrate Court, Lagos.
Prosecutor Akinlabi Adegoke told the court that the accused, who reside at No. 27, Olabiran St., Somolu, Lagos, attacked the policemen on August 19 at Olabiran Street.
Adegoke, who named the policemen as Cpl. Jacob Obande and Cpl. Olugbenga Olaore, said they were attacked with sticks and pelted with stones.
He said the policemen had gone there following a tip-off by residents that a gang of robbers had invaded the area.
``They chased the suspected robbers, who took to their heels after they had snatched a motorcycle at gun-point. The policemen chased them to Olabiran Street where they were attacked by the accused with some dangerous weapons.''
Adegoke said the offence contravened Section 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused pleaded not guilty and were granted bail in the sum of N100, 000 each with one surety each in like sum.
The Magistrate, Bola Osunsanmi, adjourned the case to September 21.
