Wildfire forces evacuation of 800 people on Majorca
Hundreds of Spanish firefighters were
on Monday battling a wildfire that has forced the evacuation of about
800 people on Majorca island and devastated 2,000 hectares of land,
officials said.
More than 80 tourists were among those evacuated.
The fire raging near Andratx and Estellencs in the west has reached the Tramuntana mountain range, an ecologically valuable area that lies parallel to the north-western coast of the island and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
About 400 firefighters and soldiers using 28 aircraft or helicopters were working to combat the blaze.
One firefighter was taken to hospital for dehydration. No other injuries or damage to buildings were reported.
The fire was the worst on Majorca since 1992.
A farmer who was suspected of accidentally starting it on Friday by burning plant remains has denied the charges.
