Mamnoon Hussain elected as Pakistan's new president
Mamnoon Hussain has been elected as
Pakistan's new president, announced the Election Commission of Pakistan, ECP on Tuesday evening, reports Xinhua.
"Mamnoon Hussain has secured 432 votes whereas justice Wajihuddin
(Ahmed) secures 77 votes, so Mr. Mamnoon has been elected as the 12th
president of Pakistan," Chief Election Commissioner Fakhruddin G.
Ibrahim told a press conference here.
Mamnoon Hussain, a presidential candidate fielded by the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) led by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, will assume the office of the president on Sept. 9 while incumbent President Asif Ali Zardari will retire from the office on Sept. 8 after completion of his five-year term as the country's president.
Tuesday's presidential elections kicked off at 10:00 a.m. local time and ended at 3:00 p.m. local time without any break.
A total of 887 members of the parliament house and four provincial assemblies had cast their votes, out of which 878 votes were considered valid while nine were invalid, according to ECP.
Voters cast their ballots at the Paliament House in the capital Islamabad and four provincial assemblies of Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
Tuesday's presidential election was an one-on-one contest between Mamnoon Hussain and Wajihuddin Ahmed, a candidate from the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
The main opposition party Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and its three allies boycotted the elections as the country's Supreme Court, on a plea by the PML-N, changed the polling date from the originally set August 6 to July 30. PPP complained that they did not have enough time to campaign for the elections due to the change of the date.
The PML-N requested the change of the voting date because many lawmakers in the country would be in Saudi Arabia for Umrah during the last few days of Ramadan, the holy month for Muslims, which is likely to end in Pakistan around August 9.
