Doping, a common occurrence in sports, says Olympians Association President
(Nigeria) Henry Amike, President of the Nigerian
Olympians Association, NOA, said on Monday that doping was a common
occurrence in sports.
Amike said in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria in
Lagos that the issue became news only when renowned athletes were found
to have used certain banned drugs.
It will be recalled that the International Association of Athletics Federations, IAAF, on July 14, indicted Tyson Gay (U.S.), and Asafa Powell (Jamaica), after the athletes tested positive to banned substances.
The president of the association said: ``Well, as far as I’m concerned, the dope thing has been on and it happens periodically and sometimes it happens to big athletes. And a lot of people are being caught every day.
``But once you are caught and you are not a reputable athlete, it is not a big deal. It is because the people that are caught in recent times are `big fish`.
``That is why the news is all over the place; I must tell you that athletes are getting themselves doped and getting caught almost every month. It’s not a new thing to us; we know what is going on and we understand what is going on.`
