Chinese docked for rice fraud

(Nigeria) A 36-year-old Chinese was on Monday charged before a
Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, for alleged forgery and fraudulent sale of
Mama Gold Rice brand.The accused, Hong Dong Shen is standing trial on a four-count charge bordering on the alleged offence.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.The prosecutor, Mr Daniel Apochi told the court that the accused committed the alleged offence between February 2011 and March 2013.
He said the accused allegedly forged the trade mark of Ollam Nig. Ltd, producers of Mama Gold Rice, and had reproduced about 140 bags of the rice, for sale to members of the public.According to the prosecutor, the trade mark is valued at N200 million.
The alleged offence is said to contravene the provisions of sections 390 and 516 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, as well as section 3 and 32 of the Merchandise Act 2004.
Following a bail application on behalf of the accused by his counsel, Justice Mohammed Yunusa granted him bail in the sum of N2 million with two sureties in like sum.
The judge also ordered the accused to deposit his traveling documents with the court's registry.
He adjourned the case to September 19, 2013 for trial.Section 390 provides a term of three years imprisonment for stealing.
