Alakio killing: police detain 2 for allegedly hijacking monies meant for widow of slain officer

(Nigeria) Umaru Shehu, Commissioner of Police, Nasarawa State on Tuesday confirmed the detention of two men for hijacking the N2 million given to the widow and children of an officer killed in the Alakio attack.
The money was given by the Nasarawa State Government and the I-G to widows and children of officers killed on May 7, attack on security agents in  Alakio.
Shehu told newsmen in Lafia that the two brothers of one of the deceased officers from Plateau collected the money from the widow who had two daughters and gave her only N20,000.
According to Shehu, the widow reported to the police that she was subjected to all manners of humiliation and was ejected from the family house with her children.
He said that the alleged ill-treatment prompted the police to invite  the  brothers, detain and query them over the allegations.
He said that they confessed to have collected the money and allegedly spent N700,000 for the funeral rites of the deceased.
The CP said he had to invite their pastor to intervene, leading to the refund of N1.3million, which the pastor suggested should be given to the widow and her children for their upkeep.
Shehu, however, warned that other relatives should desist from claiming monies meant for the upkeep of the children of deceased officers.
He charged people to fear God and imbibe the teachings of both religions to make the world a better place.
According to him, in order to ensure transparency, each widow has been directed to open an account.
He said the widows were also directed to give the accounts' numbers as well as their mobile phone numbers to the police authority for prompt action concerning all benefits

NBC has no powers to impose fine on broadcast stations --Court

(Nigeria) The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has been restrained by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, from imposing fines on broadcast stations in the country. Trial judge in the matter, Justice James Omotosho also set aside the N500,000 fines imposed on March 1, 2019, on each of 45 broadcast stations. The court made the orders in its judgment a suit by the Incorporated Trustees of Media Rights Agenda, MRA, which had sued the NBC. Justice Omotosho held that the NBC, not being a court of law, had no power to impose sanctions as punishment on broadcast stations. The court further held that the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, which gives the commission the power to impose sanction, is in conflict with Section 6 of the Constitution that vested judicial power in the court of law.
