Inconsistent policies killing Nigeria's education---Gov Jang

(Nigeria) Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State on Thursday said that inconsistency in policies was destroying the nation’s education sector. Jang said in Jos while receiving the Senate Committee on Education that such inconsistency was ``very dangerous’’ and challenged the national assembly to halt the trend.
``The National Assembly must quickly rise to this challenge before it gets out of control and destroy the future of the younger generation,’’ he stated.
He said that it was not good for the sector that each administration would discard the old policies and introduce new ones, adding that consistency was key to any progress.
``Nations like Germany practise the 6-3-3-4 (system) like Nigeria, but they have gone far because they have been very consistent with it,’’ he said.
He called on the Federal Government to ensure that state governments had direct access to Universal Basic Education funds, to ease planning the deployment of resources.
Jang said Plateau Government had put in much toward quality education and listed some steps to include the renovation of 20 primary schools and three secondary schools in each of the 17 local government areas.
``Recently, too, government released N2 billion to the state-owned university in Bokkos to develop its infrastructure,’’ he added.
Earlier, the leader of the Senate team, Uche Chukwumerije, said the members were in Plateau as part of their oversight functions and commended the government’s efforts toward quality education.
``Over the years, Plateau has been a front line state in education and we are happy that your administration has sustained that,’’ he said.
He urged the state government to relocate the Bauchi Motor Park from its current location due to its closeness to the University of Jos.
``Its closeness to the university is always a threat to the students who need every conducive atmosphere to study,’’ he observed.
