9,660 patients tested positive to HIV in Lagos---Authorities

(Nigeria) No fewer than 9, 660 residents of Lagos State, tested positive to Human Immune Virus, HIV  out of the 102, 279 patients examined in the last one year, says the authorities in the state.
The government government, meanwhile, said that 431 healthcare facilities across the state would be shut for contravening the state healthcare standards.
It also said it was impossible to  guarantee total free healthcare services for the over 18 million residents of the state, saying “there was no fund to provide the services.”
Lagos Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris,  during the 2013 ministerial briefing on the activities of his ministry, said that in order to prevent the increase in HIV, the state government through the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency,LASACA, distributed 520, 000 male and female condoms across the state.
He noted  that the state government had established HIV/AIDS counselling and testing centres in health facilities across the state, a measures to check the prevalence of the scourge within the state.
"These centres provide clients with all they need on HIV/AIDS, counselling, treatment and others. It is another of our strategy, among so many to check the problem. 84,000 HIV/AIDS booklets were also distributed in the last one year to provide adequate enlightenment on the scourge and promote safe sex behaviour among residents.
"The state government treated 36,269 patients from the newly established 24 Anti-Retroviral Treatment (ART) sites across the state,”at the health centres.
Idris noted that the 413 were discovered during the ministry’s monitoring exercise of the 1, 341 health facilities monitored in the state, adding “55 health facilities were shut for various offences in the state.”
According to hi,.  the government in the year under review, renewed the registration of 1, 713 private health facilities within the state.
“Out of the 1, 225 pharmacies outfits in the state, 102 were shut for contravening the state health facility standard.”
