(Nigeria) The Most Rev. Felix Ajakaye, the Bishop of Ekiti Catholic Diocese, has called for the release of two Reverend Sisters and a Reverend Father who were kidnapped while on official assignment. Ajakaye, in a statement in Abuja on Saturday, said that Rev. Fr. John Adeyi, the Vicar-General of Catholic Diocese of Otukpo, had been in captivity since Sunday, April 24. The bishop said that two Sisters of St Louis, Rev. Sr. Perpetua Apo and Rev. Sr. Bukola Familade, and their driver, Mr Zwugwa Zibai, were also kidnapped on Thursday, May 12. ``For over three weeks, Rev. Fr. John Adeyi, the Vicar-General of Catholic Diocese of Otukpo, has been in captivity. LASG impounds 50,472 vehicles in one year

(Nigeria) The Lagos State Government on Friday said that it inspected 1,023,812 vehicles and impounded 50,472 of them during the safety and enforcement inspections between May 2015 and May 5, 2016. Dr Dayo Mobereola, the Commissioner for Transportation disclosed this at the 2016 Ministerial briefing by the ministry at Ikeja. Mobereola said no fewer than 65, 757 drivers were arrested for violation of traffic offences, 11, 797 of the inspected vehicles did not have Hackney Permits, Vehicle Licences, Insurance and Road Worthiness Certificates during the period under review. He added that 13, 100 drivers did not have the Drivers' Licence; 12,882 vehicles were not road worthy, while 464 vehicles were unpainted, with unpleasant inscriptions on their vehicles. The commissioner said that 11, 067 vehicles had fake documents, 14, 050 drivers' flouted the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute Law, 2397 drivers were found violating the vehicle accreditation law. 100 LASTMA officers dismissed in one year ---Commissioner

(Nigeria) The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Dayo Mobereola, said that no fewer than 100 officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, were dismissed in the last one year. Mobereola said this while responding to questions from journalists at the ongoing annual ministerial briefing holding in Ikeja to mark one year of Gov. Akinwumi Ambode’s assumption of office. The commissioner said that the officials were dismissed for various unpardonable offences bordering on unethical conducts. "Up to 100 LASTMA staff members have been dismissed while many were demoted," he said. Mobereola, however, said that the state government had trained and retrained several LASTMA officials for effective service delivery. He advised LASTMA officials to carry out their duties within the law and shun every tendency to extort money from motorists in the state.

(Nigeria) A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Friday, convicted and sentenced former Director General of Director-General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Raymond Omatseye to a term of five years imprisonment over N1.5 billion contract fraud. Omatseye was prosecuted by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on a 27 count charge of bid rigging and contract splitting. Prosecuting team was led by Chief Godwin Obla,  SAN,  while Mr Edoka Oneyeke appeared for the convict. In her judgment on Friday, trial judge, Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia found Omatseye guilty of 24 out of the 27 counts of the charge preferred against him by the EFCC. The court, however, discharged and acquitted Omatseye  of 3 out of the 27 counts bordering on bid rigging. The court found his guilty of the offence of awarding contracts above stipulated threshold, and accordingly convicted him on counts 1 to 20,24,25,26, and 27.
