Nine Iraqi soldiers are dead after a United States - led coalition airstrike, Iraqi Defence Minister Khaled al-Obeidi said Saturday, the first reported friendly fire deaths in the country's fight against Islamic State extremist militia. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad needs to be removed from power, the country's opposition said Saturday as it criticized a UN resolution endorsing a Syrian political transition plan because it does not require the president's removal. The resolution, unanimously adopted by the UN Security Council on Friday, calls for negotiations between al-Assad's government and the opposition to begin in January and tasks the UN with aiding the implementation and monitoring of a nationwide ceasefire in Syria, reports dpa. However, the resolution made no mention of the fate of al-Assad, a main sticking point among major powers.
