Syrian warplanes hit IS capital al-Raqqa

Islamic State, IS, militants on Friday said that Syrian warplanes carried out 10 airstrikes against the northern province of al-Raqqa. Activists told newsmen that the airstrikes targeted the areas of Panorama, Fardous, Sina'a, al-Tawlid hospital, among other areas, Xinhua. The airstrikes left scores injured, as ambulances were reportedly speeding toward the targeted areas to collect causalities. The intensified airstrikes came as reports of Syrian army using newly-received Russian weaponry emerged on Thursday. "The new weaponry sent by Russia is of high and precise efficiency and the Syrian army has started getting trained to use them," an anonymous source said. (Nigeria) No fewer than three persons were reported dead while 3,620 others were displaced by flood in some parts of Katsina State in the last two months. Alhaji Ibrahim Abdulkarim, the acting Executive Director, State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA , disclosed this in an interview on Friday in Katsina. He said that the flood disasters were recorded in 15 Local Government areas of the state. He said that the local governments seriously affected were Baure, Bindawa, Charanchi, Daura, Dutsi and Dandume. Others were Ingawa, Kusada, Katsina, Malumfashi, Matazu, Mai’adua Musawa, Sandamu and Zango. Abdulkarim said that the state government has established camps for Internally Displaced Persons (IDP’s) and victims of the flood in the state. Tribunal seeks Saraki's arrest over absence at hearing

(Nigeria) Notwithstanding a Federal High Court order halting the arraignment of Senate President Bukola Saraki, the Code of Conduct Tribunal on Friday commenced the prosecution of the case. The Prosecution counsel, Mr Muslim Hassan, asked the tribunal to issue a bench warrant against Saraki for failing to appear before it. Hassan faulted the Federal High Court for granting the ex parte motion halting Saraki’s arraignment. He argued that the Federal High Court had coordinate jurisdiction with the tribunal and as such, had no powers to halt trial of the Tribunal. The Defence Counsel, Mr Joseph Daudu, however, prayed the tribunal to adjourn the case until after the Federal High Court sitting on Monday. Meanwhile, the Chairman tribunal, Mr Umar Danladi, adjourned the case till 1.30 p.m. for a decision to be taken.

30 killed in Taliban attack on Pakistani military base

Pakistani militants, believed to be Taliban killed 17 people at an air force base in the troubled north-west on Friday, while 13 attackers died, the military said. Over a dozen militants wearing uniforms of the paramilitary Constabulary force attacked Badaber air base in the suburbs of Peshawar city in the early morning, army spokesman Major General Asim Saleem Bajwa said, reports dpa . One group targeted a mosque inside the base and killed 16 people at morning prayer, he said, without saying whether they were civilians. An army captain was also killed as security forces surrounded the militants and killed 13 of them, Bajwa said. Ten soldiers were injured including two officers, he tweeted earlier. (Nigeria) The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, said on Thursday, that the allegations of rigging and hijacking of electoral materials in the Rivers governorship election were false. The Commission stated this when it opened its defence before the State’s Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Abuja. The tribunal is sitting on a petition filed by the All Progressives Congress, APC candidate, Dr Dakuku Peterside against the return of Governor Nyesom Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP as winner by INEC.‎ Counsel to INEC, Mr Onyechi Ikpeazu said the commission would call witnesses to prove its claim before the tribunal. 7 killed at Malkohi IDPs camp explosion

NDLEA arrests drug baron with cocaine

(Nigeria) The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, on Friday said it had arrested a suspected notorious drug baron, Azubuike Odugwe, over unlawful importation of 1.025kg of cocaine. The Agency's Spokesman, Mitchell Ofoyeju, said in a statement in Abuja that the arrest was made during inward screening of passengers on Emirates airline flight from Dubai. A court in Kiev has ordered the arrest of the second Russian national , Yevgeny Yerofeyev detained by the Ukrainian law enforcers in the Luhansk region, advisor to the Security Service of Ukraine Markian Lubkovsky said on Friday. (Nigeria) No fewer than 11 persons were killed by flood in Sokoto and Zamfara States in 2015, the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has said. Mr Thickman Tanimu , Deputy Head, Sokoto Zonal Operations Office of NEMA said 10 of the victims died in Zamfara while a seven-year old boy died at Kuchi village in Kebbe local Government of Sokoto state. Tanimu said on Friday in Sokoto while giving update of damages caused by flood in Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara that more than 86, 710 hectares valued N1.58 billion were destroyed in the three states. According to him, a total of 20, 477 homes were also affected, rendering about 50, 000 people homeless. He said that the flood affected eight out of the fourteen local government areas in Zamafara, which included Shinkafi, Talata Mafara, Gusau, Anka, Tsafe, Bungudu, Zurmi and Maradun. (Nigeria) An Ikeja Magistrates' Court, Lagos on Friday sentenced a 25-year-old unemployed man, Ogboru Godspower, to 14 years imprisonment for defiling a 13-year-old daughter of his neighbour. The Chief Magistrate, Mr Tajudeen Elias, sentenced Godspower after he pleaded guilty to the offence. "The accused is hereby sentenced to 14 years imprisonment to serve as deterrent to others and to reform him to be a law abiding citizen," he said. The convict was arraigned on August 14 on a one-count charge of defilement. The convict, lives at 30, Egbin Sand filled Ijede, Ikorodu in Lagos. The prosecutor, Jimah Iseghede, had told the court that the offence was committed on August 8 at Godspower’s residence. Iseghede said that the victim was going to take her bath when the accused waylaid her, removed her towel and defiled her. ``It was a neighbour who saw the accused in the act that alerted the whole house,’’ he said. Pastor arraigned for raping teenager

(Nigeria) A 40-year-old Pastor, Abraham Akpan, was arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates' Court, Lagos on Friday over the defilement of a teenager. Akpan of No. 39, Hassan Ogunmola St., Ijaiye, a suburb of Lagos, is facing a three-count charge bordering on rape. The prosecutor, Sgt. Jimah Iseghede, told the court that Akpan committed the offence between August 27 and 29 at the his residence. He told the court that the parents of the 16-year-old girl took her to the church for deliverance where Akpan allegedly defiled her. ``At the deliverance session, when nobody was there, the pastor raped the girl severally,” he said. The prosecutor said the offence contravened Sections 135, 137 and 141 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. Akpan, however, pleaded not guilty to the offence. The Chief Magistrate, Mr Tajudeen Elias, adjourned the case to September 21 for ruling on the bail application for Akpan.
