Syria: Lavrov, Kerry round up 12-hours talks in Geneva

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and United States Secretary of State John Kerry have rounded up the talks on Syria, which they have been holding in Geneva for more than 12 hours. Coordination of Moscow and Washington's efforts in fighting with terrorists in Syria was the main issue on the agenda, according to Tass, Russian news agency. Talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that lasted more than 12 hours were dominated by discussions of the situation in Syria and Ukraine, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry told a news briefing here upon their completion. He said he was thankful to Lavrov for speding the whole day at the table of negotiations, adding that the talks had been long but constructive. (Nigeria) Youths in the People's Democratic Party, PDP, have told the party’s senator, representing Ogun East Senatorial district, Buruji Kashamu to be bold enough to declare openly for the ruling All Progressives Congress , APC and stop pretending to be member of the PDP. Corruption: NBA new President seeks reform of EFFC

(Nigeria) The new President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Mr Abubakar Mahmoud, SAN, has advocated the reform of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. Mahmoud, who made the call in his inaugural speech in Port Harcourt, Rivers State,  said that the reform should limit its role to investigation. He said under the reform, the commission`s mandate to prosecute should be handled by an independent highly resource prosecution agency. ``The critical institutions involved must be repositioned, re-equipped and re-tooled to confront the problem of corruption on a consistent and sustainable basis. As a start, we commend the efforts of the Economic and Financial Crimes Institution for the work it is doing and for its modest achievements. `` However, going forward, the NBA must demand the reform of the institution itself. NLC will resist non-payment of workers’ salaries---Waba

(Nigeria) The President of Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, Mr Ayuba Waba, has said that the union will no longer condone the maltreatment of its members by some governors who refuse to pay salaries. Waba said this during the opening ceremony of the 3rd National Delegate Conference of the Judicial Workers Union of Nigeria, JUSUN, in Katsina State on Friday. He said that NLC would no longer watch such governors to be toying with the lives of their workers. “We are aware that some governors have not paid their workers’ salaries and pensions for the past seven months. “We have directed our chairmen in the 36 states to start protecting their members that have been denied their monthly wages. CBN warns banks on illicit money transfers

(Nigeria)The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has directed commercial banks to conduct Know Your Customers' Businesses, KYCB, to ensure customers do not transact illegal or illicit remittances through the banking industry. The CBN gave the directive to authourised dealers, mainly banks, on Friday in a circular signed by the acting Director of Trade And Exchange Department, Mr W.D Gotring and titled, ``Illicit international money remittances through the banking system’’. The apex bank had observed that some Deposit Money Banks, DMBs, were operating accounts either as companies or masking themselves as individuals for the purpose of illegally receiving money transfer flow. They then claimed to onward disburse such funds to recipients in the country. The CBN had directed the commercial banks to identify and freeze those accounts receiving illicit flows. It also directed them to submit mandate and account details of such accounts held in foreign and local currencies to the CBN. The

22 ex-Militants qualify as aircraft engineers

(Nigeria) The Presidential Amnesty Office on Friday said 22 beneficiaries of its foreign education programme had graduated as Aircraft Maintenance Engineers and had returned to the country. The Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and the Coordinator of Presidential Amnesty Programme, Brig.-Gen. Paul Boroh, disclosed this in Abuja. He said the beneficiaries were trained at the Royal Jordanian Air Academy and were equipped with EASA licence on return, adding that without the licence, they would not be useful in the aviation industry. He said that the licence made the beneficiaries certified aircraft maintenance professionals needed in modern airline operation. "Worldwide aircraft maintenance business is enormous, and expanding with the passage of time. "Approximately 500, 000 passenger and cargo aircrafts are currently in service worldwide.
