COVID-19: Edo urges compliance with guidelines, rolls out vaccination centres

(Nigeria) The Edo State Government has opened more temporary fixed posts in the metropolis, in addition to the already existing fixed and mobile centres across the state, to ensure that every eligible person for the second dose vaccination is inoculated against the virus. The state’s COVID-19 Incident Manager, Dr Andrew Obi, who disclosed this to journalists in Benin City, said the action is a part of efforts by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration to contain the pandemic and ensure the safety of citizens. The Incident Manager said the posts are sited within the Benin Airport, Government House, Police Clinic, State Secretariat, Edo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Four Mechanised Brigade and the Office of the Department of State Security. Uzodimma inaugurates Imo COVID-19 action committee

*Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State (Nigeria) Governor Hope Uzodimma has  inaugurated the Imo State version of the Steering Committee on Nigeria COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus, NG-CARES. The NG-CARES is an initiative of the Federal Government of Nigeria with assistance from the World Bank to mitigate the effect of COVID- 19 on the rural economy using CSDP, Fadama and Bank of Industry platforms. The programme is aimed at restoring the livelihoods of the poor and vulnerable, maintaining food security and facilitating the recovery of Small and mMedium Enterprises (SME's). This Federal Government programme implemented across the 36 states of the federation, with states encouraged to domesticate it. Okowa calls for operationalisation of Health Act, inaugurates Asaba Specialist Hospital

*Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta (Nigeria) Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State, has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to fully operationalise the National Health Act to curb the high rate of maternal and neonatal mortality in the country. Okowa made the call at the inauguration of Asaba Specialist Hospital, which was performed by his Adamawa State counterpart, Alhaji Ahmadu Fintiri, in Asaba. He commended President Muhammadu Buhari for operationalising the National Health Act, but remarked that it was being implemented in part contrary to the full content and letters of the act as passed by the national assembly. According to him, when fully operationalised, half of the funds would be utilised in providing free treatment to the vulnerable group thereby reducing prevailing high maternal and neonatal mortality rate which has become an embarrassment to the country. (Nigeria) The Abdul Samad Rabiu Africa Initiative, alongside the Akwa Ibom State Government, Wednesday, held the groundbreaking and flagged off construction of the Akwa Ibom State University Teaching Hospital at a ceremony in the state. The construction of the Akwa Ibom State University Teaching is being supported by a N5billion ASR Africa Health Infrastructure Grant for which N2.5billion was disbursed immediately to commence construction. FG reintroduces Covid-19 restrictions nationwide

(Nigeria) The Federal Government has reintroduced Covid-19 restrictions across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT. It also reintroduced fresh restrictions on mass gatherings, insisting that it must henceforth be 50 percent capacity. Curfew is now from midnight to 4am until further notice. This new directive is to take effect by midnight of Tuesday, a member of the Presidential Steering Committee, PSC, on Covid-19, Dr Mukhtar Mohammed, said. Mohammed, who is the Head of Technical Secretariat of the PSC, made the announcement while briefing reporters on Monday in Abuja. It explained that the measure followed the number of cases and fatalities currently being recorded in Turkey, India and Brazil. (Nigeria) The Senate, on Tuesday, urged President Muhammadu Buhari, to provide a five-year post COVID-19 special intervention programme for Nigerians living with various types of disabilities.   This was just as it urged the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, through the NIRSAL Micro Finance Bank, to provide   Special Loan facilities to Persons with Disabilities through the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities. Woman arrested for killing own one-month-old baby

The suspect, Sukurat Olajoke (Nigeria) A 35-year-old woman, Sukurat Olajoke, was arrested on Saturday at about 8:30 p.m. by men of the Ogun State police command for killing her own one-month-old baby, and dumping the corpse in the Ogun River. Policemen attached to the Enugada Divisional Headquarters, Abeokuta, who was on routine patrol with the Divisional Police Officer, Baba Hamzat, had seen the woman throwing something suspicious into the river. Her suspicious behaviour after throwing the object into the river attracted the policemen who quickly apprehended her for questioning. On interrogation, Olajoke, who said she lives at Agboole Alakoye area of Igbo Ora in Oyo State, confessed that what she threw into the river was the corpse of her one-month-old baby, whom she killed out of frustration. The DPO later engaged the service of local divers, who helped in recovering the corpse of the child, which was later deposited at the General Hospital mortuary.   According to her, the
