(Nigeria) The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Lagos State Council has urged its members to be cautious in the course of the general elections reporting and avoid fake news.
NUJ Lagos Council in a statement on Friday by it's  Chairman, Adeleye Ajayi and Tunde Olalere, Secretary, said: "We are all conversant with the ethics of journalism and as the various versions of the elections approach, the union solicits that we should all exercise caution in our reportage.
"We should be authentic in our reportorial duties and shun fake reports.
"The safety of members is also paramount. Hence, we should be security conscious of any environment we find ourselves during elections," the union said.
According to the statement, as journalists and being the fourth estate of the realm, we should ensure we publish unbiased reports.
The union, however, said that the security operatives should also accord journalists free access to coverage of events and results as they unfold.
It noted that in case of any hitch or harrassment, any affected member should not hesitate to call the situation room of the NUJ National Secretariat as well as any official of the state council for an amicable solution.
The union wished every member a hitch-free election coverage.
