Quota System and Federal Character, Again by Muiz Banire SAN

Image
Dr. Muiz Banire, SAN  (Nigeria) By Muiz Banire SAN  Last Sunday, on my Twitter page, I engaged my readers on the incubus and succubus of quota system and federal character rearing their ugly heads into our polity again.  I consider it worth the time and effort to agitate the issue here again as it is central to our development as a people and as a nation. The discussion originated from a recent statement credited to my friend, Saliu Lukmon, on the determination or election of the principal officers of the National Assembly.  The spirit behind the said intervention triggered my previous publications on the policies of federal character and quota system in the country. In the said intervention by Lukmon, he contended that the offices of the National Assembly should be zoned by the All Progressives Congress leadership while denouncing the use of money in the process, and the need to avoid the contravention of federal character in the emergence of the leadership of the National Assembly.

Buhari’s empty rhetoric, security of people and human rights

Image
President Muhammadu Buhari By Kolawole Olaniyan  President Muhammadu Buhari in his inaugural speech on May 29, 2015, promised expectant citizens that he would: “tackle head on the enormous challenges of insecurity and pervasive corruption. Nigerians will not regret that they have entrusted national responsibility to us.” Yet, his government is doing very little to address the growing insecurity, widespread corruption, and associated human rights violations in the country. Available evidence on the ground shows increasing violence, insecurity, and abductions, leading inevitably to arbitrary deprivation of lives, and many other human rights abuses, and illustrating the troubling gap between Mr Buhari’s promise and action. According to Amnesty International, tens of thousands of people have been killed as a result of violence and serious crimes in many parts of the country. Herdsmen and farmers clashes have worsened under Mr Buhari government’s watch. Several students remain missi

RESTRUCTURING: The viable option for Nigeria by Adegboruwa, SAN

Image
Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, SAN (Nigeria) By Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, SAN  In the year 2020, news broke out that the Central Bank of Nigeria was in talks with the government of Zamfara State to buy five billion naira worth of gold. Many were shell-shocked at such strange development, given the position of the federal government on issues of mines and minerals as part of the items listed in the Exclusive Legislative List of the Constitution, which has hitherto been held as being the exclusive preserve of the Federal Government. Even though the CBN and Zamfara State have offered some feeble defences on this transaction, it has raised fresh agitations within the Niger-Delta region, which has been denied control and use of minerals within their territory. The Zamfara gold has only thrown open the absurdity of the present unitary government of Nigeria stylishly termed federal. The new slogan in the Niger-Delta that has trended online is: ‘if Zamfara can sell gold, Niger-Delta can retain and sell i

Ken Saro-Wiwa's exoneration and MOSOP's craving for new beginning

Image
*Late Ken Saro-Wiwa   (Nigeria) For the Ogoni people, the murder of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight others on November 10, 1995 turned a very dark side of our country's history. It reinforced our fears of an obvious genocide being prosecuted against our people, the Ogoni, and we trembled in the face of a possible extinction having suffered much repression coupled with the environmental terror unleashed by Royal Dutch Shell leading to the death of thousands of the Ogoni people. We are aware that Ken Saro-Wiwa was innocent and suffered persecution from those who benefited from the unjust Nigerian system. As an Ogoni, it is truly despicable to come from the most naturally endowed section of our country, Nigeria, and to sit and watch those to whom we have committed the responsibility to manage our collective destiny take away all that belong to the Ogoni, use discriminatory laws to oppress the Ogoni and send us to death while our resources make huge budgets for people who bear no pain from

Ogoni and the unforgettable history of state brutality

Image
*Fegalo Nsuke (Nigeria) By Fegalo Nsuke.  The Ogoni is daily in the news with reports of extra judicial killings, persecution, Police repression, military torture and all sorts of human rights abuses. The conflict rages as the Nigerian oil industry seeks to adopt unsavoury measures to forcefully resume oil production in the area without the people's consent. The Ogoni people have become very familiar with the insincerity of the Nigerian oil industry, forcing a growing cynicism that continually creating distrusts and conflicts each time the Ogoni issue is mentioned. But the reality is that the Nigerian Government and the Shell Petroleum Development Company, a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell PLC have not been fair with the Ogoni people. Shell''s conduct in Ogoni is a major dent on our country's claim to modern civilization. It exposes the inhumanity behind Nigeria's greatness as it tells the true story of a country basking in false positives, celebrating a greatne
