Man, 40, arraigned for raping deaf girl in Osogbo

(Nigeria) A 40-year-old man, Kamoru Shittu, was on Thursday arraigned in an Osogbo Magistrates’ Court, Osun State, for allegedly raping a 21-year-old deaf and dumb girl in her school.
The prosecutor, Mereti Wilson, told the court that the offence was contrary to Section 357 and punishable under Sections 358 and 360 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Vol. II, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2003.
Wilson also told the court that the accused committed the offence on March 7 in Osogbo.
The prosecutor said the offence was committed at about 10. p.m., at Osun State Secondary School for Persons with Special Needs, Osogbo.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The counsel to the accused, Mr Bola Ige, applied for his bail, arguing that the constitution presumed him innocent until proved otherwise.
In her ruling, Magistrate A. A. Olowolagba granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
Olowolagba said the one of the sureties must be a civil servant on Grade Level 8 and above, while the other must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction.
She added that the sureties must possess three years tax clearance certificate while the addresses of the sureties must be verified.
The case was adjourned till May 19 for mention.
