NDDC Chair salutes Nigerians for investing in democracy

(Nigeria) Chairman of the Governing Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba,  has congratulated Nigerians for their support and investment in democracy, which has helped sustain the democratic process in our country.
Ndoma-Egba also commended President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration for making peace, security and development the guiding principles of the government which is demonstrated in the resolve and commitment to fight corruption and contain insurgency and militancy.
The former Senate Leader assured Nigerians that the Federal Government has put measures in place to ensure that the economy comes out of recession expediently.
This statement was released in Abuja through his Special Assistant on Communication, Mrs Clara Braide, as Nigeria celebrates Democracy Day and the second year in office of All Progressives Congress, APC .
“Nigerians have left no one in doubt that we want democracy to succeed. Even in extreme hardship, we have continued to persevere and make sacrifices.
"I urge all of us to continue to support Government at all levels. I am confident that there will be light at the end of the tunnel," Ndoma-Egba said.
The Chairman however, encouraged leaders at all levels of Government to continue to reciprocate the people’s unalloyed faith and resilience in protecting the nation’s democracy by ensuring good governance and sustainable development.

NBC has no powers to impose fine on broadcast stations --Court

(Nigeria) The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has been restrained by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, from imposing fines on broadcast stations in the country. Trial judge in the matter, Justice James Omotosho also set aside the N500,000 fines imposed on March 1, 2019, on each of 45 broadcast stations. The court made the orders in its judgment a suit by the Incorporated Trustees of Media Rights Agenda, MRA, which had sued the NBC. Justice Omotosho held that the NBC, not being a court of law, had no power to impose sanctions as punishment on broadcast stations. The court further held that the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, which gives the commission the power to impose sanction, is in conflict with Section 6 of the Constitution that vested judicial power in the court of law.
