ASUP strike: We are making progress in discussion with FG-- Asumogba

(Nigeria) The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, on Wednesday said that it was making progress in discussions with the Federal Government  over  its ongoing indefinite strike. Mr Chibuzor Asumogba, ASUP President, told  News Agency of Nigeria in a telephone interview in Lagos that when to suspend the strike would, however, depend on the final outcome of the talks.
``Our members are holding forth; we are making progress with our discussion with the Federal Government and the talks still continue. It depends on what they bring to the table; that will determine whether we will suspend or call off our strike, but I think government will do better this time,`` he said.
The ASUP president said that the union would meet again with representatives of the FG next week, to continue the dialogue.
On some institutions pulling out of the strike, Asumogba said that the union was not aware of such a development, insisting that there was no consensus that members could do so.
Lagos State Polytechnic chapter of ASUP had, on May 27, decided to return to classes, despite the ongoing nationwide strike.
Mr Arowolo Olatunji, ASUP chairman, LASPOTECH, had said that the chapter decided to return to classes immediately because some of their demands had been met by the Lagos State Government.
On the Yaba College of Technology, YCT, chapter, which did not join the strike, Asomagba said that ASUP was making plans to re-integrate it into the national body.
``It is understandable for YABATECH not to join the strike; they are in the process of rejoining the union,`` he said.
ASUP began a seven-day warning day strike on April 22 and turned it into an indefinite one on April 28.
Among other demands, ASUP wants a full implementation of the Consolidated Tertiary Institution Salary Structure, CONTISS 15 and a stop to discrimination against holders of the Higher National Diploma.
The union is also frowning at the absence of a National Polytechnics Commission, and the deplorable condition of most state-owned polytechnics.
The strike has paralysed activities in many polytechnic across the country.
